Profit From The Election

Now that the U.S. election is over, it’s time to start thinking about your online business and how you can make it grow over the next few years. But I don’t want you to forget about the election just yet, as it’s a great thing to study to see what you can do to improve your business.

The election process with both candidates “fighting” to see who can become president, is a great thing to watch and study to see how they were able to bring in the votes.

  • What did they do to “sell” their message?
  • How can you use the same methods to sell your message?

Here are some ideas off the top of my head that you could use;

  • Get your message out there to as many people as possible.
  • Find your target market and talk to them where they are.
  • Define yourself and why they should buy from you.
  • How is your product different from your competitor’s?
  • Get as many other people talking about you and your products. (ie: Affiliates)

There are many other ideas that I am sure you can come up with. Take a look at the experts and see what they do… than take action and do it! :)

    GREAT point, Joel!

Not only can people increase their success by copying what works for others (in this case the political campaigns), but often finding ways to latch onto topical news items can increase your exposure as well…

For example, if you had seen an area of Internet promotion where Obama didn’t maximize his use of online opportunities, a blog post with the heading ‘What Obama Did Wrong…’ would probably have brought in a ton of new readers, some of whom would turn out to be targeted…

    Thanks for the great tip!

One of the things people overlook is that the marketing done for the election can be applied to your product.

My biggest takeaway from observing what was done was watching how well Obama’s campaign built and kept in contact with their base. If you visitied their site you got an offer to sign up. If you signed up you were then solicted for donations and kept in touch with on a constant basis.

Something we as marketers know but at least I know I am not anywhere near as effective at doing.

    Hi Joel,

I certainly admired what Obama’s team managed to collect on the Internet.

Being a Dutch guy I’m used to a multi-multi party election. Seems a little dull to me to just vote pro or con.

    Hi Joel,
Excellent points about the election. Obama is in office because his team was wise enough to use the internet not only for fund raising but for reaching out.

This nation needs to be healed..and that will only come about by people reaching out and giving back..

Isn’t that what Internet marketing all about??

    Hi Joel,

Brett has a great point. Obama and his team were the better marketers.

One of the main weak points of the McCain camp was not going after the
youth vote like Reagan did back in the day.

Team Obama pounced on this and won the big prize as a result.

Knowing your competition and seeing where their weak points are and then
filling that gap by providing what they are not providing - more times than not, you will come out ahead.

Unfortunately for the GOP, Team Obama had a rather large gap they could work
    with.

Recognizing a need and providing a solution to that need is as Glenn mentions…
What Internet Marketing is all about.

Joel, your topic is on target and you made some great points - Thanks.
